X-rays emitted from ordinary Scotch tape

Just two weeks after a Nobel Prize highlighted theoretical work on subatomic particles, physicists are announcing a startling discovery about a much more familiar form of matter: Scotch tape.
It turns out that if you peel the popular adhesive tape off its roll in a vacuum chamber, it emits X-rays. The researchers even made an X-ray […]

Quantum cryptography effectively ‘useless’

“The basic idea is still unbelievably cool, in theory, and nearly useless in real life,” he said.
“Even quantum cryptography does not ’solve’ all of cryptography. The keys are exchanged with photons, but a conventional mathematical algorithm takes over for the actual encryption.”
Schneier explained that the weakest point of any network is not in the transmission […]

Millions on Wednesday as retirement savings evaporated, jobs disappeared

The worst financial crisis since the 1930s was stark reality for millions on Wednesday as retirement savings evaporated, jobs disappeared, stock market values slipped again and a dramatic cut in interest rates by central banks from Europe to Asia did little to stem three weeks of near panic.
What the International Monetary Fund termed a major […]

Google launches Mail Goggles

Just a quick post to mention a silly (or is it?) experiment that Google has released to the public: Mail Goggles. This feature is designed to prevent you from sending stupid e-mails in the small hours, when you’re most likely to be inebriated and at risk of making a complete idiot of yourself.

Space rock found on collision course with Earth

For the first time, astronomers have found an object on a certain collision course with Earth. Fortunately, it is so small it is not expected to cause any damage, burning up in the atmosphere somewhere above northern Sudan in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. It may, however, produce a brilliant ’shooting star’.
The space rock, […]

Researcher Tells How to Hack Image Backups

Bitmaps stored inside encrypted backup files could be vulnerable to a sophisticated ‘comparison’ attack, a German security researcher has discovered.
In a new paper, Bernd Roellgen of Munich-based encryption outfit PMC Ciphers, explains how it is possible to compare an encrypted backup image file made with almost any commercial encryption program or algorithm to an original […]

Federal Reserve spam attack emerges

Security News Comments (0)

The message contains a fake Federal Reserve letterhead and warns users in typically broken English that a “large-scales phishing attack started and has been still lasting”.

In addition to the shoddy grammar, the messages are identifiable in their attempt to lure victims to an outside URL.

On clicking the link, the user is briefly sent to a fake Federal Reserve page which attempts to download a PDF file, supposedly containing further details on the attack. Shortly after accessing the page, the user is forwarded to a pornographic web site.

Crypto hash algorithm competition set to begin

Computer News Comments (0)

The Skein algorithm family works from 256-bit to 1,024-bit in strength, 512-bit representing the primary proposal. “Skein-256 is our low-memory variant,” the Skein document states, while “Skein-1024 is our ultra-conservative variant.” The block cipher at the core of Skein is called Threefish.

About 40 submissions in total are anticipated as entries in the NIST crypto hash algorithm contest. A tough public review of algorithm candidates will begin in earnest at a NIST conference next year. NIST’s goal is to select a new hash standard in 2012 after a full public review of the finalists that manage to make it through the rigorous process of critical analysis from experts around the world.

internet news Comments (0)

A “Star Wars” inspired hover chair, a 125 mph electric motorbike and hi-fi speakers that cost as much as a small house are among the attractions at Britain’s biggest gadget show in London this weekend.Organizers of Stuff Live hope thousands of visitors will forget their financial worries for a few hours and dream instead about the latest hi-tech toys.

Scores of exhibitors will show off everything from a pocket-sized DJ mixing desk, a solar-powered mobile phone charger and a “robot guitar” that uses tiny motors to tune its own strings.

Among the more unusual items on show is the British-designed Lounger, a chair that uses powerful magnets to float in the air.

Turning Up the Heat on Bailed-Out Banks Over Bonuses

internet news Comments (0)

In letters to the heads of nine major U.S. banks getting propped up with billions of taxpayer dollars, Waxman said he “question[s] the appropriateness of depleting the capital that taxpayers just injected into the banks through the payment of billions of dollars in bonuses, especially after one of the financial industry’s worst years on record.”

Those banks have spent or set aside $108 billion to pay out bonuses to top executives, Waxman said, referencing the firms’ public filings.

Student charged after alerting principal to server hack

Hacking Comments (0)

A 15-year-old high school student in New York State has been charged with three felonies after he allegedly accessed personnel records on his school’s poorly configured computer network and then notified his principal of the security weakness.

The unnamed student of Shenendehowa Central School was charged Thursday with computer trespass, unlawful possession of a personal identification information and identity theft, according to news reports. He has been suspended from school and ordered to stand charges in family court in Saratoga County.

He and a peer allegedly gained access to file containing the personal information of 250 workers because of a district-wide error in setting up a new server. After accessing the information, he sent an email alerting the principal to the breach and signed it “A student.” With the help of the district’s IT department, the principal identified the boy as the culprit.
